The Area

Nicknamed "Little Edo," Kawagoe city preserves the atmosphere of 19th century Edo (Tokyo) in its kura buildings. Distinctive in structure and considered "national treasures," these buildings have thick clay walls, double doors and heavy shutters. Most were built after a disastrous fire swept the town in 1893. Once used as fireproof warehouses, they were later adopted for houses and shops.

The area still contains ancient reminders of the past in its temples, museums and old-fashioned artifacts.
